To this end, I’ve been doing a lot of Googling and have compiled a list of Elizabethan saying, idioms, forms of address and some general swear words. I’m not writing it as Shakespeare might’ve, because I want my readers to be able to understand it without sitting through a term of English GCSE lessons, but I’m trying to remain as authentic as possible and not using words like ‘laser’ or ‘a load of hot air’ when they wouldn’t have had lasers or hot air balloons in the late 16th century. ![]() I’m writing a historical fiction novel at the moment and damn does it take a lot of research. ![]()

Their families may be (sometime) neighbors (one of his family's minor estate borders hers') but they've never met as their families are locked in an ancient feud - kept alive mostly by her brother.
